Indoor Basketball Court Lighting Layout Methods and Lighting Design

Time:2026-08-26

Indoor basketball courts are different from outdoor basketball courts. Indoor basketball courts require lighting design, and they can be used for exercise at any time. If you want to build an indoor basketball court, you must pay attention to the court lighting. Good lighting will give you a good mood. So let me introduce the principles of indoor basketball court lighting design and how to arrange lighting fixtures for an indoor basketball court.

Indoor Basketball Court Lighting?

Indoor basketball court lighting fixtures are installed vertically suspended, which is different from the two-side oblique installation method used for outdoor basketball court lighting. Indoor basketball court lighting fixtures also differ from outdoor ones in terms of power and quantity. Generally, indoor court fixtures have a power of 80-150W. Because vertical illumination is used, the effective illumination area of indoor court lighting fixtures is also smaller than that of outdoor courts, so the number of fixtures is significantly greater than that for outdoor courts.

The installation height of indoor basketball court fixtures should be no less than 7 meters (there must be no obstacles within 7 meters above the basketball court). As mentioned earlier, the pole height for outdoor basketball courts should also be no less than 7 meters based on this principle. The arrangement of indoor court lighting fixtures should follow the principle of symmetry, arranged in sequence from the centerline of the court outward to the surroundings.

How to Arrange Lighting Fixtures for an Indoor Basketball Court?

1. Starry Sky Layout

Top-mounted layout, where fixtures are arranged above the playing area. The light beams are perpendicular to the plane of the court. For top-mounted layouts, symmetrical light distribution fixtures are preferred, and it is suitable for gymnasiums that mainly use low spaces, require high uniformity of horizontal illuminance on the ground, and do not require television broadcasting.

2. Two-Side Layout

Fixtures are arranged on both sides of the court, with light beams not perpendicular to the plane of the court. For two-side layouts, asymmetric light distribution fixtures are preferred and are usually installed on catwalks. This layout is suitable for gymnasiums with high vertical illuminance requirements. When using two-side lighting, the aiming angle of the fixtures should not exceed 66 degrees.

3. Hybrid Layout

A combination of top-mounted and two-side layouts. Hybrid layouts are suitable for large comprehensive gymnasiums and should use fixtures with multiple light distribution forms. The fixture arrangement is the same as the top-mounted and two-side layouts described above.

4. Fixture Selection

For indoor basketball court lighting, 280W LED court-specific lights are commonly used. Indoor basketball court lighting fixtures are aesthetically pleasing and elegant, with lighting that is not dazzling, soft, and highly uniform, and have received unanimous recognition from athletes, referees, and spectators!

The above introduces the principles of indoor basketball court lighting design and how to arrange lighting fixtures. We all know that the design and layout of basketball court lighting follow certain principles; they cannot be arranged and designed casually. If you have no experience, you can find a reliable designer from a decoration company to help design a more comfortable basketball court. It depends on your requirements. Indoor basketball court lighting standards generally have four levels: recreational training, general competition, professional competition, and television broadcasting. Recreational training requires about 18 lights, general competition about 28 lights, professional competition 40 lights, and broadcasting has even higher requirements.
